HORNBY'S or RINGED STORM-PETREL Hydrobates hornbyi

Another distinctive, and enigmatic stormie, whose nests were only discovered in 2017 in the Atacama Desert. Added to the fact that it rarely forages inshore means that it is difficult to observe. Pelagics out of Peru are unreliable and erratic, the best way seems to be to get on a ship travelling north. Thankfully a few cruise ships visit the area, which is how we got these photos, birds are numerous for about two days on the route from the southern tip of South America, in an area around Lima, particularly to the south. Before and after that they are rarely seen, although they are known to disperse as far as central Chile to Ecuador, they can be up to 500Km from the coast at certain times of the year.
