Named for the broader white margins to the flipper, this taxa is distinguishable in the field, being also slightly larger and of a paler colouration. Confined to the Banks Peninsula, in South Island, NZ., it is not regarded by most authorities as a distinct species, but apparently has a slightly different breeding strategy, and doesn't occur away from that small area.
