Split from the previous species and breeding only on Macquarie Island in vast colonies, the taxonomic treatment has long been the subject of debate, based on the fact that some Macaronis have the appearence of Royals, or some Royals appear in Macaroni colonies. Current thinking seems to be two species, probably because the vast majority of Royals are found on Macquarie, where there have been only one or two Macaronis (if you want to look for them). |
