FIORDLAND CRESTED PENGUIN Eudyptes pachyrhynchus

The only mainland breeding crested penguin, and as such one of the rarest numerically speaking, this bird, slightly larger than Rockhopper, breeds on the west and south coasts of South Island N.Z., and also on Stewart and Solander Islands. Its main distinguishing features are the lack of fleshy margins at the bill-base, and a number of white stripes on the cheeks.
