Found over much of the Americas and West Indies, except the Amazon Basin and the far south of Patagonia, northern breeders are migratory, which explains several UK records.
The right-hand bird was taken in southern England, where birds often linger for several years. Hybridisation, although theoretically possible, has never been proven. The bird
on the left is an immature taken in Argentina.
