Confined to the Kermadecs, Lord Howe and Norfolk Islands, this has been treated as a subspecies of Masked. However, a new species was described
in 1988 based on fossil evidence, which was subsequently found to be synonymous with the tasmani subspecies of Masked Booby. There are slight morphological differences, and several
authors are suggesting a split, however this isn't reflected in the latest IOC list at the time of writing.
