An almost circumpolar breeder in temperate regions, breeding on small bodies of water often in forest areas.
There are a couple of gaps in the distribution, one in Central Asia where it is possibly undetected, and western Europe including the UK. Birds are readily
seen in the UK in winter however, and the bird on the main page was taken there, where birds sometimes remain into the summer and very occasionally breed.
Wintering birds usually frequent temperate coastal waters closest to their natal areas. A little translatory "licence" in the scientific name could result in
it's being called "Grey-cheeked Arse-foot".
