Recently placed it's own monotypic genus, one of the most unusual and attractive cormorants. Formerly designated Shag, the two names are
interchangeable and are gradually being amended, at present most southern hemisphere species are still termed shags, but there is no morphological reason for it. This taxon occurs from
northern Peru to south-central Chile, and on the Atlantic littoral in Patagonia. It is classified as near-threatened due to a decline caused by fishing bycatch, and some direct exploitation.
