NEW ZEALAND GREBE Poliocephalus rufopectus

Unfortunately we only visited New Zealand many years ago, and as our interest at the time was seabirds I only ever took one shot of this attractive species. Another factor is that, although the population is thought to be increasing, it only occurs at the very north of south Island, the bulk of the population being in North Island, which is generally of less interest to birders than South and Stewart Islands. Like Little Grebe, it is often referred to as Dabchick.
