LITTLE GREBE Tachybaptus ruficollis

Familiar to all English birders, a widespread species across Europe to Japan. Several subspecies are involved, one of which, that of Papua New Guinea, Java etc. has recently been afforded full species status as Tricoloured Grebe. The similar Australasian Grebe, which occurs in the same region as well as Australia, was originally described as a full species (in 1826). The left-hand shot is of the short-lived transitional plumage.
