Found in India, Sri Lanka and parts of southeast Asia, a common species which is confined to fresh water. It breeds in
bushes and trees especially in areas prone to flooding, and is sedentary in the main. The bird on the front page is a non-breeding adult, whereas the others are in full
plumage but filoplumes are in evidence for only a short time, as with many cormorants.
