Common and widespread from the Aleutians to Baja California, Yucatan, Bahamas and Cuba, both inland and coastally. Somewhat surprisingly,
there have only been two accepted records this side of the Atlantic, one in Northumberland and one in Galway, although there are records from the Azores.
This may be due to the fact that aside from the spectacular breeding plumage,
they are easily overlooked, cormorants not being the most interesting species. There are five subspecies which vary in size somewhat, the nominate is migratory, others are largely sedentary.
