A mainly arctic breeder closely related to Common Guillemot, there are several
records for the UK, but most have been found dead, many twitchers had never caught up with one. This situation ended recently
when a very much alive bird spent time in Portland Harbour, much to the chagrin of those of us who had travelled to
Shetland, still it was a good "blocker" for quite a few years. Slightly the more abundant world-wide, Thick-billed tends to be more northerly although they overlap in several regions.
