AMERICAN WHITE PELICAN Pelecanus erythrorhynchos

Locally common in the USA and Canada, breeding in (often) large colonies, from British Columbia and Alberta to Ontario (Canada) and south to California and Texas. Often on islands, on prairie lakes, they may commute up to 100Km to feed. Post breeding dispersal is south as far as Nicaragua, and some to the West Indies. There are small sedentary populations in Texas and Mexico. The "comb" on the upper mandible of breeding adults is a unique feature, although within the Americas birds are unmistakeable.
